Cocaine Addiction

The myth that cocaine was not addictive was widely accepted throughout the medical profession and society for quite some time. Some accepted this concept as late as the eighties despite the knowledge that regular cocaine users experience incredible cravings for cocaine. In fact, obsessive-compulsive drug seeking is the hallmark of cocaine addiction. The confusion arose because cocaine addiction was being measured against heroin addiction, as was cocaine withdrawal symptoms being measured against heroin withdrawal symptoms.  While cocaine and crack cocaine do not produce a physical addiction, like heroin, cocaine and crack have their own distinct physical effects and psychological withdrawal symptoms. Both cocaine and crack cocaine are highly addictive drugs with crack being cocaine that has been processed from cocaine hydrochloride to a free base for smoking. Crack cocaine addiction can happen almost immediately. Crack cocaine was given its name due to the crackling sound it makes when it is being smoked. Cocaine addiction and crack addiction is indeed real. To validate this is the fact that there has been a tremendous increase in the number of people seeking cocaine detox programs and drug rehab programs for the treatment of cocaine addiction since the late 1980’s.

Cocaine Detox

The term detox implies a clearing of toxins. However, for individuals with drug addiction, drug detox is related to drug withdrawal syndrome. Drug withdrawal syndrome is, the predictable constellation of signs and symptoms following abrupt discontinuation of, or rapid decrease in, intake of a substance that has been used consistently for a period of time.

Once the user stops, which can prove very difficult for a regular or chronic cocaine user, they will very quickly start to feel cocaine withdrawal symptoms. But in contrast to opiate withdrawal and alcohol withdrawal, the cocaine withdrawal syndrome is not dramatic, obvious, and physical, but primarily behavioral. The immediate “crash” upon exhausting the cocaine supply is followed by depression, anxiety, agitation, and suspiciousness (sometimes actual paranoia). As the abstinence continues, there is extreme boredom, lack of motivation, and depression. Recalling what the “high” was like provokes intense cravings, as do numerous conditioned triggers (people, objects, and situations associated with cocaine addiction). Often these conditioned association triggers provoke a new cocaine binge, and vulnerability to relapse probably persists for a lifetime.
For these reasons, a cocaine detox program without appropriate medical management constitutes a great risk for patient health. Summing up, the cocaine withdrawal syndrome is the main obstacle in a cocaine detox program for a recovery from cocaine addiction. Due to the intense cravings associated with cocaine withdrawal and need for continuing support, a medical inpatient cocaine detox program has proven to be the most effective cocaine detox program.

Cocaine Detox Program

Now that we have established that cocaine addiction does in fact have its own distinct cocaine withdrawal symptoms, the safest and most effective method of dealing with cocaine withdrawal is in an inpatient cocaine detox program. An inpatient cocaine detox program does not have to be located in a hospital, but should definitely be medically based.

By medically based we mean the cocaine detox program should be located within a drug rehab program or drug addiction treatment program and be complete with 24 hour nursing, a physician trained in addiction medicine (ASAM certified) and an addiction treatment staff capable of interacting with a person going through cocaine detox. The main goal of a cocaine detox program is to insure the patient is medically stable, manage any cocaine withdrawal symptoms that occur and prepare a relapse prevention plan for the patient. To be clear, the relapse prevention plan should probably be a longer term addiction treatment program.

A cocaine detox program is only the first step in the treatment of cocaine addiction. Research shows that people who discontinue cocaine addiction treatment after a cocaine detox program generally end up in relapse. As stated, the main goal of a cocaine detox program is medical stabilization, while the total focus of a drug rehab program or addiction treatment center is emotional stability and how the person will support the gains made in the cocaine detox program.

A person will generally spend 3-5 days in a detox program for cocaine addiction. We say generally because this length of stay in a cocaine detox program can be affected by the combination of drugs a person may be using, any other drug addictions, medical problems, psychiatric issues and the severity of their cocaine withdrawal symptoms.

There is no one cocaine detox program that is perfect for everyone. You have to take the time and match the needs of the person looking for a cocaine detox program with the cocaine detox services being provided in the actual cocaine detox program.

Cocaine Addiction Treatment Program

Any quality cocaine addiction treatment program or cocaine drug rehab should have as one of its components a cocaine detox program. The cocaine detox program should be located within the cocaine addiction treatment program to allow for a seamless transfer from the cocaine detox program into the cocaine addiction treatment program. This type of transition provides for the highest continuity of care available possible.

A cocaine addiction treatment program or cocaine drug rehab is no different than any other type of addiction treatment program. Every cocaine addiction treatment program or cocaine drug rehab should:

  • Have J.C.A.H.O. accreditation and be licensed by the state in which they provide their addiction treatment services
  • Provide a variety of addiction treatment or drug rehab services to meet the individual needs of each patient
  • The addiction treatment program or drug rehab should have a comprehensive family recovery component
  • The addiction treatment program or drug rehab should have a dual diagnosis treatment component
  • The addiction treatment program or drug rehab should have relapse prevention and aftercare planning.

Please keep in mind there is no one cocaine addiction treatment program or cocaine drug rehab that is perfect for everyone. Take the time to match the addiction treatment program needs of the individual seeking addiction treatment or drug rehab with the actual services provided in the drug rehab or addiction treatment program.
