Drug Addiction Treatment Programs May Treat Other Addictions Too!

by Jonathan Huttner

Certain drug addiction treatment programs are designed to help people with multiple issues – addictions to more than one drug, psychiatric disorder in conjunction with an addiction to drugs, etc. Before we continue any further, let us define drug addiction as an uncontrollable use of drugs, which has created a compulsion for more drugs, cravings and tolerance. If there is a possibility this description may fit you, please CALL the drug addiction treatment helpline NOW at 1-866-99-DETOX (1-866-993-3869).

When most people think of a drug addiction treatment program, they think of drug addiction treatment and rightfully so. Unfortunately, when an individual seeks out drug addiction treatment and is admitted into the addiction treatment program, other issues are usually uncovered. In some cases, it might be a psychiatric disorder or medical problem and in other cases, a secondary addiction such as compulsive gambling, sex addiction or an eating disorder may be evident. It is not unusual for a person to be in denial of one problem and acknowledge another, but the question if everyone can be treated in the same drug addiction treatment program still exists.

Drug Addiction Treatment Philosophy

There are a lot of drug addiction treatment programs that pass themselves off as being able to treat any addiction you might have, regardless of severity. But that could not be farther from the truth. You have to first start off with the philosophy of the drug addiction treatment program. If the philosophy of the program is to focus on drug addiction, that is what it should stick to. If the philosophy that the drug addiction treatment provides encompasses several addictions, then the program will need to be structured in a different manner.

The drug addiction treatment center will have to be designed with several components of care. The "general" component, or less distinct, will be for drug addiction treatment and all the issues that accompany drug addiction. For secondary addictions, such as the ones mentioned above, there must be specialized addiction treatment components with staff trained in the treatment of the particular addiction. The key is integrating the treatment of the various addictions without compromising overall care.

You can imagine how difficult it would be to provide effective treatment in a generalized drug addiction treatment center with people of one addiction interacting with those of another addiction with little or no support or understanding. On the other hand, with the proper drug addiction treatment staff and programming, you can create an incredible recovery experience.

Specialized Drug Addiction Treatment

Due to the difficulty associated with trying to effectively treat a variety of addictions concurrently, the development of specialized drug addiction treatment has evolved. In these cases, what many would call the secondary addiction becomes the primary addiction. For example, in a case of the person suffering from an eating disorder and a drug addiction, the eating disorder would be seen as the primary addiction and the program would be centered on that, with the drug addiction becoming the secondary addiction. Even with specialized drug addiction treatment, both or all of the addictions must be treated if one is to expect a full recovery. If the individual relapses in one addiction, he or she will generally relapse in the other. As in any drug addiction treatment center, the staff requires in-depth training in conjunction with clinical supervision.

To effectively treat the various dynamics that accompany addictive and compulsive disorders, it is truly an art. There is no one perfect drug addiction treatment program or program providing specialized drug addiction treatment, so educate yourself on the services the drug addiction treatment center provides.
